Sexual Abuse
ACC Sexual Abuse Claims Support
If you have experienced sexual abuse or sexual assault, you may be able to access ACC-funded counselling, therapy, and support. You deserve to feel safe, informed, and supported through the process.
Support for survivors
Making an ACC claim after sexual abuse can feel overwhelming. For many survivors, the process may bring up fear, stress, shame, confusion, or concern about being believed.
ACC Advocates NZ helps people find independent support, navigation services, and advocates who understand the sensitive nature of these claims.
ACC support may be available
ACC may provide support for mental injury caused by sexual abuse or sexual assault. This may include counselling, therapy, assessments, and other support depending on your situation and ACC’s decision-making process.
Claims may relate to recent abuse or historical abuse. You still have the right to seek information and support.
The process should not retraumatise you
Survivors should not have to face the ACC process alone. Guidance from a trauma-informed advocate or navigation service can help you understand what is happening, what information may be needed, and what your options are.
Support can also help protect your privacy and reduce the stress of trying to manage everything by yourself.
You are not to blame
Sexual abuse is never the survivor’s fault. Reaching out for help is a strong and valid step. You deserve care, dignity, privacy, and support.
When people often seek help
People may seek support when:
- They are unsure how to begin an ACC sexual abuse claim
- They need help accessing ACC-funded counselling or therapy
- The claim process feels too difficult to manage alone
- They are worried about privacy or confidentiality
- Their claim has been delayed, declined, or questioned
- They need help understanding letters, forms, or assessments
- They want independent guidance from someone outside ACC
How support services may help
Trauma-informed advocates and navigation services may be able to support you by explaining the ACC process, helping with communication, and making sure you understand your options.
- Explaining sensitive claims in plain language
- Helping you understand counselling and therapy options
- Supporting communication with ACC
- Helping with declined or delayed claims
- Supporting privacy and confidentiality concerns
- Helping you prepare for assessments or reviews
Recent and historical abuse
Some people reach out soon after abuse or assault. Others may seek support years later. Both are valid. There is no shame in asking for help when you are ready.
ACC support may be available for both recent and historical abuse claims where the eligibility requirements are met.
